After two continued difficult years, the best way to fill your heart with sunshine is to make travel plans for the summer. You never know what’s going to happen as times are uncertain. But looking back on last year, I can especially recommend the Greek islands. On the one hand, they have been largely spared from really bad Covid-19 waves so far, and on the other hand, the weather there is very reliable. Therefore, my travel tip for the summer of 2022 is Greece and its beautiful islands.

But before I tell you in detail about the OKU Kos Hotel, which is an adult only hotel, check out the fine selection of Greek hotels on the sustainable booking portal Select Green Hotels. There you will find fantastic green hotels for families, vegans or even honeymooners.

Furthermore, the Greeks love good design and are a step ahead of their southern European neighbors when it comes to sustainability. Beautifully designed eco-hotels can be found on almost every popular island. We were there in mid-October to check out theOKU Hotel in Kos and the weather was gorgeous. It was heaven!

Laidback Luxury

Hammocks at the reception! Even before I had the refreshing welcome drink in my hand, I was already swinging into one of the hammocks that are comfortably installed in the open reception area. OKU advertises with the slogan “Laidback Luxury” and at that moment I knew what the hotel meant by that.

The hotel complex is located right on the beach just behind the dunes. Each room is located in a white Greek-style bungalow. The regular rooms have a terrace, the fancier ones have their own pool. The open restaurant, the bar and the large pool form a central venue for breakfast, dinner, relaxation, and celebrations. During the evenings, DJs often play.

A wooden walkway through the dunes leads to the beach. Probably the quietest, most beautiful beach I’ve been to in a long time. We, who are actually always in action, spent whole days submerged in the most comfortable beach beds imaginable. I know I’m using a lot of superlatives here, but it was really relaxed. All we did was actually doing nothing, enjoying the silence, reading, sleeping, and occasionally jumping into the turquoise water. Amazing!

Another highlight: Every morning, OKU offers yoga classes on the beach, free of charge.

Eco Concept Store, Local Products and Beach Clean-ups

Oku Kos beach travel tip summer 2021

Another highlight of the hotel is the concept store, which offers sustainable fashion, natural cosmetics and pretty homeware. Since the boutique has a bar, you can relax and sip a cocktail while shopping. You can also buy the products used in the rooms (last year from the Danish brand meraki)*. The spa is even more authentic, using natural oils and salts from the island for massages and treatments.

The whole hotel is virtually plastic-free and there is an organized beach clean-up every other week. If you have never done a beach clean-up, I can only advise you to do so. Whether in a group or alone. It feels really good to pick up the annoying plastic waste while walking on the beach and maybe even encourage your fellow beach bums to follow suit.

By the way, OKU has also opened in Ibiza in the summer of 2021!
