There’s a new organic skincare gem in town in Munich’s Glockenbachviertel. NKM, which stands for Naturkosmetik München (organic skincare Munich), is not only an extremely beautifully designed shop but also a studio and DIY kitchen at the same time. Here you can buy natural cosmetics made in Munich, watch the owner Mareike Peters try out new recipes, or buy countless raw materials and accessories to mix it yourself.
The shop floor is extraordinarily spacious with high ceilings and large windows. Lots of light wood and green plants make the space look friendly and natural. A great deal of emphasis was placed on sustainability. For example, the wooden counters and tables are made of the wood of a single tree. The interior was designed by Anne Schädlich, who has also designed the new Condé Nast offices in Munich.

DIY organic skincare and ready-made organic cosmetic products
But now to the important part: skincare. The eight NKM products are all personally developed and tested by owner Mareike. They are manufactured in Bavaria and consist mainly of German raw ingredients. Mareike and her team attach particular importance to regionality.
The range of NKM is divided into raw materials Do-it-yourself and ready-mixed products. You will find toners, cleaner, creams, a balm, serum and now also sunscreen. For the store opening, two new products were presented: the renewing moisturizer, which is full of vitamins, and the algae hyaluronic serum. Since algae contain a lot of positive phytoactive ingredients, I am looking forward to testing it. I’m actually a big fan of algae. At the moment I still try the antimicrobial toner, which I like very much. It is pleasant on my sensitive and impurities-prone skin.

The organic skincare success story
How and above all how quickly Mareike managed to build her own brand and realize her dream of owning her own organic skincare store in Munich is truly unique.
Mareike started to experiment with organic skincare during her studies. She was looking for a suitable product for her impure skin and finally decided to create the products herself. She gained her knowledge by studying relentlessly, reading books, and trying out different recipes, learning everything there is to know about botanical ingredients, Because she was so excited about the results, she began to share her experience via tutorials on Instagram. That was in October 2018. Obviously, there is such a need for this topic that her account @naturkosmetikmuenchen grew quickly. And so one thing came to another: her followers asked for raw ingredients, so Mareike sold them together with her recipes. When many of her fans, who she affectionately calls her village, started asking for finished products, NKM was born. Meanwhile, Mareike and her boyfriend employ a team of permanent and freelance employees, they successfully run the store close to Gärtnerplatz and their online shop. And they’ve done it all in less than two years! I’m excited and curious about what’s next. Mareike wants to do workshops in the NKM Atelier and she is constantly developing new products, now also for more mature skin (like mine). We can be curious because I think we will hear a lot from her in the future.
