Anyone who has ever been to Verona knows why this city was the inspiration for Romeo and Juliet. It is fantastically beautiful and full of history. In addition to the famous arena, where open-air operas are performed in summer, the city offers great architecture and good restaurants serving delicious Italian cuisine. We spent a few days in a small luxury hotel in Verona and were thrilled.

Brother Lorenzo is a mentor and confidant of Romeo in Shakespeare’s drama, who eventually married the two lovers. Legend has it that he came to the hills of the present Fra’Lorenzo Relais to collect his medicinal herbs and linger in the shade of the olive trees. Hence the name of the hotel.

The five-star Relais Fra’ Lorenzo is located on the Torricelle above the old town, which can be seen wonderfully from the terrace. It is a small, fine hotel with only 10 rooms, making the stay particularly familiar and exclusive.

A city relay in the middle of nature

The saltwater-filled pool is like a quiet oasis. Here, for example, a natural shower and thalasso glands offer wonderful relaxation. The training course in the open air is particularly special. On a green lawn behind the pool there is an outdoor gym, which is equipped with training suggestions.

The entire property smells of cypresses, olive and lemon trees. Aromatic herbs such as sage, rosemary, mint, thyme and lavender are also grown here. The food is of course organic and comes largely from the region. Since the hotel is small, there is only breakfast and small snacks during the day. Personally, I think this is enough, because Verona has many great restaurants to offer.

The Relais is surrounded by about 8 hectares of forest, which makes the city stay even more relaxing. We were here in August and found it pleasantly cool and relaxing even in midsummer. You can spend the hot lunch time by the pool and then discover the city in the late afternoon until the evening.

To say goodbye, we were given a bottle of homemade olive oil, extracted from the olive trees from the relais garden.

I highly recommend a trip to the city of Romeo and Juliet. If you are looking for a sustainable luxury hotel in Verona, where you can simply relax between culture and city walks, fray is in the right place at Fra’ Lorenzo. For guests arriving by electric car, the hotel offers two charging stations in the garage.
